The Malian government is calling for the Confederation of Sahel States, known as the AES, to be fully integrated into the UN’s strategic assessment of the region. The AES is made up of three African countries which are Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger.
This move signals a direct challenge to the long-standing political structures in West Africa as these nations seek to chart a path independent of traditional regional blocs.
The push for international recognition comes after a major reorganization of power in the Sahel.

In January 2025, Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger made the collective decision to leave the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) to strengthen their own cooperation through the AES.
By advocating for the inclusion of this alliance in UN reviews, Bamako is attempting to force the international community to acknowledge the “changing political and security landscape” of the continent.
This strategy aims to ensure the AES is treated as a legitimate and “emerging regional bloc” on the global stage.
Mali and its neighbors in the AES are actively shifting their military and diplomatic ties away from traditional Western partners to focus on strategic cooperation with Russia.

This transition follows the decision by the three nations to cut links with ECOWAS, citing the organization’s “perceived devotion to Western powers” and a failure to handle the region’s security problems effectively.

By partnering with Moscow, these countries aim to acquire advanced military technology and hardware to build their own independent defense capabilities.
Malian Foreign Minister Abdoulaye Diop explained the vision for this new partnership, stating, “Our countries want to strengthen our capabilities, and develop autonomy so that we can break away from dependency patterns“.
The request was presented during high-level talks between Malian officials, including Foreign Minister Abdoulaye Diop and Reconciliation Minister Ismaël Wagué, and a UN delegation led by former Ethiopian President Sahle-Work Zewde.

As reported by West African Voice Network, Mali emphasized the need for the United Nations to “adapt its regional approach” to better reflect the current realities of the Sahel.
The results of this independent review are expected to be delivered by September 30, 2026, which will then guide the UN Security Council on its future operations in the area.
