Doralice Carneiro Sobreira Goes, a 47-year-old public servant and gymnast, faced a terrifying health crisis after eating expired pesto she purchased at a local market in Brazil. She described her ordeal to Jam Press, highlighting the shocking sequence of events that unfolded.
The troubling story began in December 2021 when Goes bought a jar of pesto from a nearby store. She noticed that the product lacked an expiration date and storage instructions, but as a frequent customer, she proceeded with the purchase. Her plan was to use the pesto in sauces for toast and salads.
However, Goes didn’t consume the pesto until January 2022. Despite its appearance and aroma remaining unchanged, the taste was delicious. The following day, she experienced extreme fatigue, breathing difficulties, and tingling in her tongue.
Things took a terrifying turn when she attempted to drive herself to the hospital. After parking her car, her body suddenly stopped responding, forcing her to throw herself out of the moving vehicle to avoid an accident.
At the hospital, doctors diagnosed her with botulism, a rare but severe illness caused by bacteria-borne toxins that attack the nerves, leading to muscle paralysis and respiratory problems. It was suspected that improperly stored pesto had allowed the bacteria to multiply and produce these toxins.
Goes received an anti-botulin drug, which partially restored her mobility and speech. However, her road to recovery was long and arduous. She spent nearly a year in the hospital, relying on breathing machines and feeding tubes, and undergoing various treatments to alleviate her chronic pain and muscle atrophy. She even took up Pilates and physical therapy to regain strength.
After ten months and ten days, Goes was finally discharged from the hospital, showing remarkable progress. Although she still used a walker for assistance, she had regained independence in basic activities.
While her body healed, the psychological scars of the incident lingered. Hoping to get to the bottom of her poisoning, both Goes’ sister and state officials visited the vendor responsible and conducted a thorough investigation to try and see how the pesto was stored.
The store owner apologized and no future action was taken. In light of the incident, Goes is extra cautious about where she buys her food.
Despite the adversity, Goes remains grateful for her recovery and continues her journey towards full rehabilitation.
