March 25, 2024

In a solemn announcement, the U.S. Navy has identified the Sailor lost overboard from USS Mason (DDG 87) during operations in the Red Sea on March 20th.

Aviation Machinist’s Mate 2nd Class Oriola Michael Aregbesola, hailing from Florida, was assigned to the esteemed “Swamp Foxes” of Helicopter Maritime Strike Squadron (HSM) 74, deployed aboard the Mason since November, operating in the U.S. 5th Fleet.

Aregbesola, who joined the Navy in July 2020 and reported to HSM-74 in December of the same year, was lauded for his selfless dedication and exemplary service by Cmdr. Eric Kohut, HSM-74 commanding officer. Kohut emphasized Aregbesola’s remarkable performance and his deep connection with every member of the ship/air team.

Mason, alongside HSM-74, forms a vital part of the Dwight D. Eisenhower Carrier Strike Group currently deployed in the U.S. 5th Fleet area of operations.

The Navy community mourns the loss of Petty Officer Aregbesola, offering heartfelt condolences to his family, and honoring his memory as an embodiment of the Navy’s core values.

In 2020, Oriola Aregbesola eagerly shared news about his employment with the US Navy, marking the beginning of a journey filled with purpose and commitment. As we mourn his loss today, we remember his dedication to serving his country and honor the sacrifices he made. Rest in peace, Oriola.
