In an era where digital convenience is paramount, the Nigerian Immigration Service (NIS) has revolutionized the passport application process. This comprehensive guide outlines the effortless steps for Nigerians to apply for their international passports online, ensuring transparency and efficiency while avoiding unnecessary expenses.

Understanding the Costs:
The cost of acquiring a Nigerian passport varies depending on the type and duration. For a 32-page booklet with a validity of 5 years, Nigerian citizens incur a fee of ₦35,000, while those in the diaspora pay $142. Conversely, a 64-page booklet valid for 10 years costs ₦70,000 for Nigerians and $242 for diaspora Nigerians.

Step 1: Proceed to the Official Website
Navigate to the NIS website at passport.immigration.gov.ng. Select your location and desired application type. Enter your National Identification Number (NIN), date of birth, and captcha code for identity verification.

Step 2: Complete Data Fields
Provide essential details including the preferred processing state, booklet type, and processing office. These selections determine the applicable fees, ensuring transparency throughout the process.

Step 3: Document Upload
Upload passport-sized photographs and supporting documents, adhering to International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) standards. These include natural skin tones, adequate brightness, and contrast, ensuring compatibility with biometric systems.

Step 4: Biometric Capturing
Visit the designated Immigration Office for biometric data capture, a vital step in the application process. However, effective from March 8, applicants will benefit from a contactless process, eliminating the need to visit NIS offices. Passports will be delivered directly to applicants’ doorsteps, enhancing convenience and safety.

Step 5: Track and Collect
Monitor the application’s progress using the provided application and reference numbers. With an efficient processing timeline of two weeks, applicants can expect timely passport issuance, streamlining travel preparations and commitments.
