Charlotte’s journey into the spotlight began when caretakers at the Aquarium and Shark Lab in Hendersonville made a startling discovery – she was pregnant, despite not having encountered a male ray in over eight years. Enter parthenogenesis – a rare phenomenon believed to be the true source of Charlotte’s pregnancy. Dubbed a “virgin birth” or “miracle birth,” this process involves the creation of offspring from maternal cells, resulting in offspring similar but not identical to the mother. While unconventional, parthenogenesis has been documented in closely related species, including sharks.
