Kris Jenner fought to get editing rights when she and her family got their start on reality TV.
“I don’t know if this is accurate, but I’m probably one of the only women in the reality television world that has editing rights to our show,” the Kardashians star, 70, said during the Monday, March 9, episode of the “SmartLess” podcast. “I am able to take anything out.”
Jenner added she’s had this power since “day one” of filming Keeping Up With the Kardashians. Kris and her children — Kourtney Kardashian, Kim Kardashian, Khloé Kardashian, Rob Kardashian, Kendall Jenner and Kylie Jenner — starred on the E! series, which aired for 20 seasons from 2007 to 2021. The family currently stars on The Kardashians, which premiered on Hulu in 2022.
“I said, ‘I am not doing this unless I have [it].’ … Over the years, from day one when we knew we had that freedom and that kind of power so to speak, it made us more comfortable,” Kris reflected. “It made us be the way we always are and how we’re bonded together.”

While Kris has had the power to edit, she’s “never” had to use it for her family. However, Kris has asked for the editors’ assistance if her hair “looked crazy” or if someone could “fix” her “lipstick.”
“I was so vain,” she quipped.
Kris also explained how the idea of doing a reality show with her family came to fruition.
“I think a lot of people talked to me and a couple of my older kids from time to time, but always for years, had said to me, ‘Your family, you’ve got to do a reality show. Nobody would believe what goes on in this life of yours.’ You couldn’t make any of it up,” she recalled. “So I eventually decided to create this show in my mind, and it kind of lived up there for a while.”
Kris added that good friend Kathie Lee Gifford was one of the people in her inner circle who thought the Kardashian-Jenner family’s lives were “wild” enough for reality TV.
“I just thought it was normal,” Kris confessed. “I thought, ‘I’m living the life.’”
Kris shared that she met with legendary casting director Deena Katz, who “couldn’t believe” what a typical day looked like for the family.
“The people that would call or stop by [our house], just a lot of celebrity interactions and drama and just wild,” Kris said. “It was extraordinary.”

Kris explained that Katz presented the idea of a reality show with Kris’ family to Ryan Seacrest. Kris later met Seacrest’s team, and production began “30 days” later.
When Kris told her children about the “opportunity” that she wanted them to pursue, they agreed. However, Kourtney looked at her mom “sideways” about it, but Kris posited that it would be a good way to “sell more T-shirts” at their boutiques Smooch and Dash.
However, if any of her children voiced that they didn’t want to do the show, she would have respected their wishes.
“I can create something and I can produce something, but you can’t control other people even if they’re your kids,” she said. “I have a great deal of love and respect for my children, and I’m never going to make them do something they don’t want to do.”
