Muir is a proud puppy parent to dog Axel, who is often a staple on the TV reporter’s social media pages.
“I think pets are, like, the unsung heroes because they still want to chase the birds,” Muir quipped on a September 2020 episode of Live With Kelly and Ryan. “This dog, in particularly, [will run after] birds, squirrels, frogs. I mean, you find a frog in the pool, he’s good for three hours. [He’s] just, like, staring at the frog. But, don’t you think they help at this time?”

Muir further noted that Axel helped him cope with the isolation of the COVID-19 pandemic lockdown earlier in 2020. The next year, Muir offered more details about how he bonds with his canine companion.
“I take him for runs. Sometimes I’ll go for a four-mile run [and] he’s on a little leash next to me,” Muir said on the Rachael Ray Show in April 2021. “He does 50,000 steps a day, he wears one of those collars that tracks everything.”
According to Muir, Axel is a very good listener to most of his commands when they take their outdoor runs.
“He, kind of, walks like a panther for a second, and then he veers right into the woods,” Muir said of his dog’s fast pace. “I was, like, ‘Oh, no!’ You couldn’t even hear him in the words. He was gone, so I had that heart-pounding moment we’ve all had for about 10 minutes … [and] he’s having the time of his life, and he’s giving me a heart attack. Sure enough, I turn around behind me on the drive, the ears flagging, the tongue out of his mouth. He is so excited, barreling down the driveway.”
