Visa Revocations Spark Concern Across U.S. Universities as International Students Face Scrutiny

April 8, 2025

April 8, 2025 — Harvard University has confirmed that the student visas of five individuals—three current students and two recent graduates—have been revoked by the U.S. State Department, amid what appears to be a sweeping crackdown on international students by the Trump administration.

Harvard is among more than a dozen higher education institutions nationwide that are actively tracking and reporting visa revocations in what observers are calling a mass targeting effort. The move comes during President Donald Trump’s second term, raising fresh concerns about immigration policies and their impact on academia.

According to Secretary of State Marco Rubio, more than 300 student visas have been revoked across the country since the beginning of the year. While some revocations have been linked to alleged violations of visa or green card conditions—including minor legal infractions or participation in demonstrations—others have occurred without explanation from federal authorities.

The visa cancellations have affected students across a diverse range of universities, sparking growing alarm among academic institutions and advocacy groups. Here’s a breakdown of reported cases across select schools:

  • Arizona State University: 8 students
  • Central Michigan University: 4 students
  • Colorado State University: 6 students
  • Harvard University: 5 students
  • Kent State University: 3 students
  • Minnesota State University: 5 students
  • North Carolina State University: 2 students
  • Ohio State University: 5 students
  • Stanford University: 6 students
  • University of California system: Number unknown; multiple campuses affected
  • University of Cincinnati: “Small number” reported
  • University of Colorado: 2 students
  • University of Kentucky: “Small number” reported
  • University of Massachusetts Amherst: 5 students
  • University of Michigan: 4 students
  • University of Nevada, Las Vegas: 4 students
  • University of Oregon: 1 student

Universities have expressed concern over the suddenness and opacity of the visa cancellations. In many cases, impacted students were not given clear reasons for the revocations, creating uncertainty about their academic and legal futures in the U.S.
