In a harrowing incident today at 11 am, a private jet carrying around 10 individuals, including Very Important Personalities (VIPs), crash-landed at the Samuel Ladoke Akintola Airport in Ibadan, Oyo State. The jet, identified by its registration number N580KR, veered off the runway into a nearby bush.
Swiftly responding to the emergency, firefighters and rescue officials from the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) rushed to the scene. Fortunately, despite the gravity of the situation, there were no reported casualties or fatalities.
According to a spokesperson for the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), Carol Adekotujo, the private plane, originating from Abuja, landed safely but overshot the runway. “It was a private plane from Abuja. It landed safely but overshot the runway. There was no casualty,” Adekotujo affirmed during a phone conversation with our correspondent.
Tunji Oketunmbi, spokesperson for the Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau, promised to provide further details but had not done so as of press time.
This incident adds to the growing concerns about the frequency of aviation mishaps, despite recent changes in leadership within aviation agencies. The situation echoes the November incident where the Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, narrowly escaped death in a crash-landing at the same airport.
Authorities are expected to conduct a thorough investigation to address the rising challenges in aviation safety.
