In a significant cabinet reshuffle, Nigeria’s President Bola Tinubu has terminated the appointments of five ministers, signaling a shift in his administration’s approach. The affected ministers include Uju Kennedy-Ohanenye, Minister of Women Affairs; Lola Ade-John, Minister of Tourism; and Jamila Bio Ibrahim, Minister of Youth Development. Also relieved of their duties were Tahir Mamman, Minister of Education, and Abdullahi Muhammad Gwarzo, Minister of State for Housing and Urban Development.

The announcement was made during the Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting on Wednesday. In a statement released by the presidency, President Tinubu expressed appreciation for the service of the outgoing ministers and wished them well in their future endeavors.

“The president thanked the outgoing members of the Federal Executive Council for their service to the nation while wishing them the best in their future endeavours,” the statement read.

The president also addressed the newly appointed ministers and those reassigned to different portfolios, emphasizing the importance of their roles in driving the nation forward. He described their appointments as a call to service and urged them to devote themselves to the administration’s objectives.

“He then charged the newly appointed ministers as well as their reassigned colleagues to see their appointment as a call to serve the nation,” the statement added. “He further stressed that all appointees must understand the administration’s eagerness and determination to set Nigeria on the path to irreversible growth and invest the best of their abilities into the actualisation of the government’s priorities.”

In addition to the dismissals, the president announced the re-assignment of 10 ministers to new portfolios and nominated seven new ministers for onward transmission to the Senate for confirmation. Among the new nominees, notable selections include Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu as Minister of State for Foreign Affairs and Nentawe Yilwatda as Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction, signaling the official end of suspended Betta Edu’s tenure.

Other nominees put forward for ministerial roles are Maigari Dingyadi as Minister of Labour and Employment, Jumoke Oduwole as Minister of Industry, Idi Maiha for the newly established Ministry of Livestock Development, Yusuf Ata as Minister of State for Housing and Urban Development, and Suwaiba Ahmad as Minister of State for Education.

The reshuffle is seen as a strategic move by the Tinubu administration to ensure that its leadership team is aligned with the government’s agenda of setting Nigeria on a path to sustainable development. The changes come amid mounting expectations for improved governance and economic reforms, as the country faces significant challenges in various sectors, including education, housing, and youth development.
