President Tinubu Hails Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway as Symbol of Hope Amidst Controversies

President Bola Tinubu has championed the 700 km Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway project as a beacon of hope, unity, and prosperity for Nigeria, despite facing significant criticism. The ambitious infrastructure initiative aims to link Lagos to Cross River, passing through Ogun, Ondo, Delta, Bayelsa, Rivers, and Akwa Ibom states, culminating in Cross River.

The project, which necessitates the demolition of several buildings, has sparked considerable opposition from many Nigerians who question the timing of its execution. Addressing these concerns, President Tinubu urged for public understanding, especially from those whose properties and livelihoods will be affected. He emphasized the compassionate nature of his administration and assured that affected individuals would receive adequate compensation.

“We gather to mark a significant milestone in our journey towards progress and development,” Tinubu declared at the project’s flag-off ceremony. “This 700 km superhighway, a 10-lane road project, represents a crucial step in enhancing connectivity, facilitating economic growth, and improving the quality of life for our people.”

Highlighting the broader benefits, Tinubu compared the project to Ireland’s Wild Atlantic Way, which significantly boosts tourism revenues. He expressed gratitude to the engineers, workers, and stakeholders whose dedication has driven the project forward and called for continued adherence to safety, sustainability, and social responsibility.

“This project is more than just a road – it is a symbol of hope, unity, and prosperity. It will connect our communities in nine states, foster trade and commerce, boost tourism, and create new opportunities for generations to come,” he stated.

Tinubu also addressed the strategic importance of the project in alleviating congestion at Lagos’ Tin Can Island and Apapa ports. The new route is expected to complement the Lekki Deep Sea Port, enhancing business and investment opportunities along the corridor.

Minister of Works, Dave Umahi, reinforced the project’s national significance, underscoring its alignment with the country’s best interests. He elaborated on the adoption of the EPC+F (Engineering, Procurement, and Construction Plus Finance) model, which involves the federal government investing and awaiting private investors to contribute their counterpart funds.

In his concluding remarks, Tinubu reiterated his appeal for public patience and cooperation, emphasizing the project’s long-term benefits. He officially flagged off not only the highway but also the spurs connecting to the Sokoto-Badagry Expressway and the African Trade Route, which links the Southeast to Cameroon. Additionally, he announced the commencement of massive rehabilitation efforts for 330 roads and bridges across the nation.

“To the glory of God and benefit of our people, it is my greatest pleasure to flag off this project and also virtually flag off the spurs about to be procured. I also flag off the massive rehabilitation of 330 roads and bridges across the nation,” Tinubu proclaimed, marking a significant milestone in Nigeria’s infrastructural development.
