PASAN Shuts Down National Assembly Amidst Indefinite Strike

June 3, 2024

On Monday, the Parliamentary Staff Union of Nigeria (PASAN) effectively shut down the National Assembly in compliance with the indefinite strike action declared by Organized Labour. This strike is in pursuit of a living wage for Nigerian workers.

Both gates of the Assembly complex were locked, preventing workers and visitors from gaining access. The Nation reports that electricity and water supply to the Senate and House of Representatives buildings, as well as other facilities within the complex, have been cut off by the union.

As a result of the strike, committee activities scheduled for Monday, including a revenue monitoring hearing by the House Committee on Finance, were cancelled. Auxiliary workers who reported for duty were unable to enter the complex, and union officials were seen ensuring adherence to the strike action.

At the phase one of the Federal Secretariat, which houses the Ministries of Labour and Employment, Communication, Niger Delta, and others, union leaders were observed moving in and out to ensure compliance, making certain that no staff were working.
