At least nine people were killed on Sunday evening after two gunmen opened fire at Australia’s popular Bondi Beach, authorities have confirmed.
The New South Wales Police Force said 11 others were injured in the attack, including two police officers. One of the suspected gunmen was shot dead, while the second suspect is in critical condition and remains under police guard.
The shooting unfolded along the busy waterfront shortly after 6:45 p.m. local time. Video footage verified by ABC News showed hundreds of beachgoers fleeing the area as gunfire rang out on the northern side of the beach. Police said their first emergency call reporting shots fired came in at approximately 6:45 p.m.
Emergency responders and heavily armed police units were quickly deployed to the scene, with images showing multiple casualties being evacuated on stretchers amid a large security presence.
Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese described the incident as “shocking and distressing,” confirming that federal authorities are working closely with state officials.
“Police and emergency responders are on the ground working to save lives,” Albanese said in a statement. “My thoughts are with every person affected.”
Police initially urged members of the public to avoid the area and seek shelter. In a follow-up update, officers confirmed that two people were in police custody but emphasized that the operation was ongoing.
“Please obey all police directions and do not cross police lines,” the New South Wales Police said, adding that the situation remained active.
Prime Minister Albanese said he has been in direct contact with New South Wales authorities, including the state premier, and assured the public that further updates would be provided as more details are confirmed.
Investigations into the motive for the attack are ongoing.
