Nigeria’s Police Chief Reveals Foreign Mercenary Involvement in Planned Nationwide Protests

July 26, 2024

The Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, announced on Friday that intelligence reports indicate foreign mercenaries are involved in the proposed nationwide protests.

In a press briefing held in Abuja, Egbetokun cautioned Nigerians to exercise caution and thoroughly consider the implications before joining any protest group.

“We have been monitoring developments surrounding protest threats,” Egbetokun stated. “While some groups call for violent protests, emulating Kenya’s recent events, others advocate for peaceful demonstrations. However, some individuals promote peaceful protests with violent undertones, raising concerns about their sincerity.”

Egbetokun emphasized Nigeria’s history of violent protests and urged citizens to recognize the dangers of unchecked demonstrations. He expressed appreciation for patriots who have withdrawn from the protests due to apparent sinister motives and the ignorance of those calling for violence.

“We note those who have spoken out against any form of protest at this critical juncture, fearing enemies of our country may be manipulating the process. We confirm their fears are genuine, as we have credible intelligence on foreign mercenaries’ involvement in this planned protest,” he said.

The IGP’s remarks come at a time of heightened tension, with various groups planning to take to the streets. His warning underscores the potential for external influences to exploit the situation, further destabilizing the country.

Egbetokun concluded by urging all Nigerians to exercise caution and have a rethink before participating in any protest. The Nigerian police remain vigilant and committed to ensuring the safety and security of all citizens during these turbulent times.
