In a remarkable display of unity and empathy, members of the Nigerian House of Representatives have unanimously decided to reduce their salaries by half for a period of six months. This decision comes as a demonstration of solidarity with the Nigerian people, who are currently grappling with severe economic challenges and widespread food insecurity.

The motion to reduce lawmakers’ salaries was amended by Deputy Speaker Benjamin Okezie Kalu (@OfficialBenKalu), who proposed that 50% of their monthly salary of N600,000 be contributed to aid Nigerians during these difficult times. The House collectively endorsed this revised prayer, showcasing a rare moment of bipartisan agreement.

Kalu’s amendment was inspired by a proposal from Representative Isiaka Ayokunle. Ayokunle had urged advocates of the impending nationwide protests to reconsider their plans and instead engage in dialogue with the government. His appeal was for constructive discussions to address the nation’s issues, rather than resorting to demonstrations.

Deputy Speaker Kalu emphasized that the salary reduction is intended to support the federal government’s efforts to curb the escalating prices of food items. This initiative aims to provide some relief to Nigerians who are facing substantial hardships due to the current economic situation.

“This decision reflects our commitment to share in the sacrifices of our fellow citizens,” Kalu stated. “By contributing a portion of our salaries, we hope to mitigate the adverse effects of rising food costs and demonstrate our dedication to finding solutions that will benefit all Nigerians.”

The unanimous vote highlights the lawmakers’ recognition of the urgent need to address the economic woes affecting the nation. It also underscores their willingness to take tangible steps to alleviate the suffering of their constituents.
