In another episode of power woes, Nigeria finds itself enveloped in darkness following a collapse in the nation’s electricity grid. The recent incident, occurring at around 11:51 AM on Sunday, witnessed the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) managed grid faltering. The system’s capacity nosedived from 2,407 megawatts to a meager 31MW by noon, ultimately plummeting to zero by 1 PM.
Despite the privatization of the sector by the Federal Government over a decade ago, the reliability of the grid continues to be elusive. Frustratingly, this marks the grid’s failure on more than 141 occasions, leaving consumers grappling with the unreliability of the power supply.
Distribution companies are already alerting customers about the situation, even as the generation companies have repeatedly expressed concerns over the impact on the safety and durability of their equipment.
Kaduna Electric confirmed that the loss of bulk power supply left Kaduna, Sokoto, Zamfara, and Kebbi states in darkness.
According to the system operator’s platform, all 20 power plants, except Ibom Power with 31 megawatts, were offline by 11:51 AM.
