The Kingmakers of Kano Emirate have been summoned by the State Government, signaling the imminent announcement of the new Emir of Kano. This development follows the recent dissolution of the five Emirate Councils in the state and the removal of their Emirs, who were appointed by former Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje.

As of the time of this report, two prominent kingmakers were seen arriving at the Government House in Kano. Led by the Chief of Staff to the Governor, Shehu Wada Shagagi, the kingmakers included Alhaji Yusuf Nabahani, the Madakin Kano and head of the kingmakers, and Makaman Kano, Alhaji Abdullahi Sarki Ibrahim.

Governor Abba Yusuf is currently in a closed-door meeting with the state’s legislators. Earlier on Thursday, the lawmakers repealed the state’s Emirates law, which had been enacted by former Governor Ganduje in 2019. This law had restructured the Kano Emirate, leading to the appointment of the five Emirs.

The repeal of the law and the subsequent summoning of the kingmakers mark a significant shift in the Kano Emirate’s traditional structure. The meeting at the Government House is expected to culminate in the formal announcement of the new Emir of Kano.
