NANS Urges Tinubu to Address Soaring Cost of Living, Issues Ultimatum

February 5, 2024

In a recent gathering held in Osogbo, Osun State, the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), Southwest Zone D, has voiced its concern over the surging cost of living in the country. Expressing the struggles faced by many Nigerians to make ends meet, the student body conveyed its stance through an official statement released after a meeting.

The statement, jointly signed by Zonal Coordinator Comrade Alao John, Zonal Secretary Comrade Sanni Olamide, and Zonal Public Relations Officer Comrade Bamigboye Oluwadamilola, emphasizes the urgent need for President Tinubu’s intervention in addressing this pressing issue.

The National Association of Nigerian Students, NANS, Southwest Zone D has urged President Bola Tinubu to quickly address the issue of the high cost of living in the country, saying many Nigerians are finding it difficult to survive.

The association expressed deep concern over the hardship being faced by citizens and issued a strong call to action at President Tinubu to urgently address the issue.

“Nigeria has been grappling with a myriad of economic challenges, including inflation, unemployment, and a weakening currency, which have significantly contributed to the rising cost of living across the nation. The impact of these economic pressures has been particularly severe on the average Nigerian, making it increasingly difficult to afford basic necessities such as food, shelter, and healthcare.

“The citizens are facing unbearable economic hardship as a result of the soaring cost of living. Many families are struggling to make ends meet, with stagnant wages and rising prices pushing them further into poverty.

“NANS Southwest Zone D is thereby issuing a direct appeal to President Bola Tinubu to intervene and address the worsening situation. As the leader of the nation, President Tinubu is urged to prioritize the welfare of Nigerian citizens and take decisive action to alleviate their suffering,” the association said.

It subsequently issued a 14-day ultimatum for President Tinubu to respond to its demands and implement concrete measures to tackle the cost of living crisis.

“Failure to do so would result in mass protests, with NANS Southwest Zone D vowing to mobilize students and citizens to take to the streets in large numbers, ” NANS added.
NANS Southwest Zone D therefore called upon all relevant stakeholders, including government officials, policymakers, and civil society organizations, to join hands in addressing the urgent needs of the Nigerian people.

The association emphasized the importance of swift and decisive action to mitigate the impact of the cost of living crisis and restore hope and dignity to millions of struggling Nigerians.

“With a clear ultimatum issued to President Tinubu and a commitment to mobilize mass protests if necessary, the association has signaled its determination to hold government accountable and advocate for the welfare of the Nigerian people. It is now incumbent upon the authorities to heed these calls and take meaningful steps to alleviate the suffering of the populace, ” it added.
