According to a translated transcript obtained by the BBC, the hotel’s chief receptionist reported, “We have a guest who is high on drugs and who is trashing the room. So, we need someone to come.” The receptionist also expressed concerns for the guest’s safety due to the room’s balcony and noted that he was “trashing the entire room” whenever he was “conscious.”

Payne had been open about his struggles with substance abuse. During a 2021 appearance on the “Diary of a CEO” podcast, he revealed his battles with drugs and alcohol during his early years in One Direction, calling it a “really, really, really severe” issue. “There is some stuff that I’ve definitely never spoken about,” he said, acknowledging the depth of his struggles.
