Federal authorities have leveled accusations against a Las Vegas doctor, Kofi Sarfo, and his wife, Rose Sarfo, who serves as an office manager, for allegedly obtaining $1.3 million in fraudulent pandemic relief loans. The U.S. Justice Department claims that the Sarfos conspired to submit false loan applications to secure funds designated for COVID-19 relief.
According to the recently unsealed federal indictment, the couple diverted some of the loan money towards purchasing stocks and cryptocurrency instead of using it for their business as intended.
The charges against them include four counts of wire fraud and one count of conspiracy to commit wire fraud. Additionally, Kofi Sarfo faces an additional charge of money laundering. On Wednesday, Kofi Sarfo was arraigned and pleaded not guilty to all charges. His trial is scheduled to commence on September 25.
Kofi Sarfo has been a licensed doctor specializing in internal medicine and family practice since 2004, as per records from the Nevada State Board of Medical Examiners. However, the board lodged a complaint against him in 2022 alleging malpractice, failure to maintain proper medical records, and billing for services not rendered.
The malpractice allegations revolved around two patients who received injections during visits with Kofi Sarfo in 2015 and 2016. The board claimed that he performed these injections without accurate and documented medical analysis or justification for the treatment rendered.
In a settlement filed last month, Kofi Sarfo admitted to the charges concerning medical records and billing for services. As part of the settlement, the malpractice charges were dropped. He was issued a reprimand letter and required to pay fines and the board’s investigative costs totaling over $15,500.
This case sheds light on alleged misconduct by a prominent Las Vegas doctor and his wife amidst accusations of fraudulent activity involving pandemic relief funds. The trial will determine their guilt or innocence and could have significant consequences for the couple’s personal and professional lives.
