The Lagos State Police Command has apprehended a 32-year-old woman, Funmi Faith, on allegations of child maltreatment. This development was confirmed in a statement released on Wednesday by the State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Benjamin Hundeyin.
The incident first gained public attention after a concerned user on the social media platform X (formerly known as Twitter) shared a video depicting the abuse and called for immediate intervention to rescue the female child involved. The video, which quickly went viral, features a voice condemning the abusive treatment and appealing to the Lagos State government for action.
In the video, a voice can be heard saying, “Mummy Mariam, this is bad. It is dehumanising. You can’t treat this girl like this. I am giving Lagos State government this video, this is dehumanising.”
Reacting to the outcry, officers from the Oke-odo Division swiftly moved to arrest Funmi Faith on Tuesday. SP Hundeyin confirmed that the child has since been placed under the care of the Lagos State Ministry of Youth and Social Development, ensuring she receives proper care and shelter.
This case underscores the ongoing issue of child maltreatment in the region and highlights the importance of vigilant community and governmental response to protect vulnerable children.
The Lagos State Police Command continues to encourage citizens to report any form of abuse, emphasizing the role of public vigilance in safeguarding the welfare of children.
