Smollett, 42, made headlines in January 2019 when he reported being attacked in Chicago by two masked men who he claimed were supporters of then-President Donald Trump. He alleged they poured bleach on him, placed a noose around his neck, and hurled racial and homophobic slurs. However, an extensive investigation by the Chicago Police Department found no evidence to support his claims. Authorities later accused Smollett of orchestrating the attack.

In March 2019, Cook County State’s Attorney Kim Foxx dropped all charges against the actor in a controversial deal that required Smollett to forfeit his $10,000 bond and complete 15 hours of community service. However, a special prosecutor was later appointed to reopen the case, leading to Smollett’s conviction in December 2021.

“This was not a prosecution based on facts. Rather, it was a vindictive persecution, and such a proceeding has no place in our criminal justice system. Ultimately, we are pleased that the rule of law was the big winner today.”

Following his conviction, Smollett was sentenced in March 2022 to 150 days in county jail. He was released early while his legal team appealed the decision. Despite the controversy, Smollett has remained active in the entertainment industry.

In 2022, TMZ reported that Smollett directed a film starring Vivica A. Fox. More recently, he sought outpatient rehab treatment in 2023, with his representative describing the move as “necessary” for his personal growth.
