GOP Rep. Introduces Impeachment Articles Against Kamala Harris Despite Expected Failure

A GOP lawmaker introduced articles of impeachment against Vice President Kamala Harris on Tuesday, citing her handling of the southern border as the primary reason. This move comes shortly after President Joe Biden stepped down from the campaign trail, and Harris launched her own bid for the presidency.

Rep. Andy Ogles (R-Tenn.) introduced the resolution, accusing Harris of “high crimes and misdemeanors” and arguing that she has “demonstrated extraordinary incompetence in the execution of her duties and responsibilities.” Ogles specifically pointed to Harris’s “stark refusal to uphold the existing immigration laws” and her “palpable indifference to people of the United States suffering as a result of the ongoing southern border crisis.”

Harris has yet to respond to the resolution and did not immediately reply to an inquiry for comment from Forbes.

Since announcing her White House bid following Biden’s departure from the race on Sunday, Harris has been the target of intense GOP criticism. Republicans have focused on her role in addressing the surge of migrants at the southern border—a key point of contention during Biden’s administration. Harris was initially tasked with managing the border situation at the outset of Biden’s presidential term.

Among the criticisms is a potential floor vote led by Republican Conference Chair Elise Stefanik (R-N.Y.) to condemn Harris for her handling of the U.S.-Mexico border. Despite the Republican-controlled House, it remains unlikely that an impeachment would pass in the Democrat-controlled Senate.

As the political landscape continues to shift, Harris’s response and the subsequent actions by both parties will be closely watched, particularly in the context of the upcoming presidential race.
