Federal Government Summons Tripartite Committee Meeting Amid Nationwide Strike

June 3, 2024

In response to the ongoing nationwide strike organized by labor unions, the federal government has taken decisive action by convening a meeting of the Tripartite Committee through the National Salaries, Incomes, and Wages Commission (NSIWC).

A source familiar with the situation disclosed that the primary agenda of the meeting will be centered around discussions regarding the new minimum wage. The meeting is slated to commence at 10 am on Tuesday, aiming to address the pressing concerns raised by workers across the country.

The government’s decision to summon the Tripartite Committee comes in the wake of widespread compliance with the strike directive issued by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC) on the first day of the indefinite nationwide strike.

Reports indicate that the government was taken aback by the extent of adherence to the NLC/TUC directive, reflecting the resolute stance adopted by workers in demanding fair wages and improved working conditions.

The rift between the Organised Labour and the federal government escalated during the last negotiation meeting held on May 31, culminating in the labor unions’ decision to walk out. The impasse stemmed from the government’s refusal to accede to the demand for an increase in the minimum wage, which currently stands at N60,000.

Leadership Newspapers has reported a significant compliance with the strike directive in numerous states across the Federation on Monday, underscoring the widespread support garnered by the labor unions’ cause.

As tensions mount and the strike action continues to exert pressure on the government, all eyes are now turned towards the outcome of the Tripartite Committee meeting, with hopes for a constructive dialogue and meaningful resolution to the prevailing impasse.
