Controversies Define Resignation of All Progressives Congress National Chairman

July 17, 2023

The resignation of Senator Adamu Abdullahi as the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) marked the end of a tumultuous era for the ruling party, which has experienced a series of leadership changes since its formation in 2014.

The APC’s founding chairman was Chief Bisi Akande, succeeded by Chief John Odigie Oyegun, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, and Governor Mai Mala Buni of Yobe State, who served as the caretaker chairman before Adamu’s election. Each chairman faced an unceremonious ousting, and Adamu’s tenure was no exception, marred by a string of controversies.

Key Controversies during Adamu’s Tenure:

Clash with Salihu Lukman: Adamu’s term was defined by a protracted feud with Mall. Salihu Lukman, the party’s National Vice-Chairman, North West, who filed a lawsuit to remove him from office. Lukman criticized Adamu’s handling of party affairs, highlighting informal decision-making processes and lack of transparency.

Backing the ‘Wrong Horse’: Adamu’s declaration of Senator Ahmed Lawan as the consensus candidate for the APC Presidential primary, allegedly approved by former President Muhammadu Buhari, sparked controversy within the party. This move contradicted the aspirations of Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who eventually emerged as the party’s candidate.

Poor Outing at Elections: Adamu’s influence within the APC was called into question when he failed to secure his polling unit, ward, and Nasarawa State for the party’s candidate during the Presidential and governorship elections. Many criticized his alleged lack of campaign efforts.

Inability to Resolve Crisis: Adamu inherited a party fraught with internal conflicts across several states, including Kwara, Lagos, Osun, Bayelsa, Rivers, and Kano. The party suffered from numerous factions, and tensions persisted under his leadership.

Row over National Assembly Principal Officers: Adamu’s opposition to the reported list of principal officers in the National Assembly raised concerns among party leaders. This stance was seen as conflicting with the President’s supposed endorsement of the list.

Absence at Class 99 Crucial Meeting: Despite being the National Chairman of the President’s party, Adamu allegedly skipped a meeting attended by former governors who were elected in 1999. This absence underscored the strained relationship between him and the President.

Comment on Akeredolu’s Health: Adamu’s remark regarding the health of Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu of Ondo State drew criticism within the party. Akeredolu, who was on medical leave, refuted the claim of “extreme incapacity” made by Adamu and clarified his condition.

Adamu’s resignation signifies the end of a controversial chapter for the APC, leaving the party with the task of addressing internal challenges and regaining stability.
