Nigerian Journalist David Hundeyin Detained in Harare Airport, Zimbabwe

July 20, 2023

Nigerian independent journalist, David Hundeyin, found himself in a distressing situation when he was detained at Harare Airport in Zimbabwe. Raising the alarm over his predicament, Hundeyin took to Twitter to share his ordeal on Wednesday night.

Hundeyin stated that he had been confined to a locked room for nearly seven hours after landing in Zimbabwe earlier that day. The reason given for his detention was that, despite using the travel document of a country with a visa-free relationship, his nationality as a Nigerian required him to obtain a visa.

Accompanied by a lady from Uganda, who was also from a visa-free country, Hundeyin shared images of the cramped room they were confined to without any windows or access to a toilet. The distressing conditions forced them to resort to using a bottle for basic necessities.

As the situation unfolded, there was growing concern for Hundeyin’s safety and well-being. The incident sparked discussions about the treatment of travelers at Harare Airport and raised questions about visa policies for nationals from visa-free countries.

Further updates on Hundeyin’s situation and the circumstances surrounding his detention are awaited as the news continues to gain attention and concern from the global community.
