April 3, 2026

STURGIS — Sturgis’ Angela Cary is the winner of the Sturgis Journal Girls Basketball Player of the Year fan vote.

Cary, a graduating senior for the Trojans, helped them win their first district title in a decade. The Trojans reached the regional round, where they were upended by DeWitt 39-38, but Cary and the senior class led the orange and black to an impressive 20-win season.

Nearly 21,000 votes were cast. Cary earned 8,181 of those for 39.48 percent of the total. Lydia Wells of Bronson finished second with 24.68 percent. Gracie Schultz totaled 9.8 percent for third place.

Cary scored 10 points in her final game for the Trojans vs. DeWitt. She reached a career-high in points earlier this year as well, knocking down 30 for Sturgis in a home victory over Paw Paw.

She was also voted to the Wolverine Conference honorable mention team this year. A state champion in track for the Trojans, Cary enters her final sports season for Sturgis looking for more success.
