The Detroit Red Wings are trying to shore up their defense.

The Vancouver Canucks have the lanky defenseman Tyler Myers available.

It seems like an ideal match, and it sounds like the Red Wings are going for it.

NHL insider David Pagnotta has reported that there’s an offer on the table in which the Red Wings would send a second-round pick to Vancouver to acquire Myers.

That seems like a quality deal for the Canucks. They’d be unlikely to get a first-rounder for Myers, which makes the second-rounder the next best thing.

Maybe it’s not really on the table, or maybe the Canucks are seeking out a specific prospect already in an organization rather than a future pick.

Time is slowly getting short. The NHL trade deadline is on March 6.

Myers isn’t worth much of anything specifically to the Canucks at this point, because he’s a veteran defenseman and Vancouver has nothing to play for.

But in Detroit, Myers could impact the playoff picture. He could try to help the Red Wings make a deep postseason run.

He wouldn’t be the most important defenseman for the Red Wings, but Myers would have real value to a high-quality Detroit team.

The rumblings here are strong enough that it’s worth keeping an eye on this pairing. The Canucks even scratched Myers earlier in the week for “trade-related reasons.” Vancouver must feel that something is close or they wouldn’t have done that.

In less than a week, Myers could very well be wearing a new sweater, and maybe it’ll be Detroit’s.
