PHILADELPHIA — The Philadelphia 76ers lost rookie guard VJ Edgecombe to a back issue at halftime of Tuesday’s loss to the San Antonio Spurs. The No. 3 overall pick took a hard fall on a 3-point attempt at the end of the first half before being ruled out for the rest of the game.
On Wednesday, the Sixers announced that Edgecombe’s MRI revealed a lumbar contusion. He is ruled out for Wednesday’s contest against the Utah Jazz and will be re-evaluated before the team faces the Atlanta Hawks on the road on Saturday.
Coach Nick Nurse said he talked to Edgecombe in the aftermath of the news and he said the rookie is feeling fine as he and the team move forward.
“Well, I’m sure you guys got the report,” Nurse said pregame on Wednesday. “All the imaging came back good, clean. I did talk to him. He said he was fine. He’ll get re-evaluated here in the next couple days and see where he’s at.”
Edgecombe has played 57 games thus far as a rookie and is averaging 15.3 points, 5.5 rebounds, and 3.9 assists while shooting 36.1% from the floor. He is a hugely important piece to this group so the Sixers will want him to rest as much as possible before he gives it a go again on the floor.
