Lakers Facing Backlash for Announcement Hours Before NBA Free Agency

June 30, 2025

Lakers Facing Backlash for Announcement Hours Before NBA Free Agency originally appeared on Athlon Sports.

The Los Angeles Lakers head into this offseason under intense pressure after a turbulent finish to their 2024‑25 campaign. LeBron James officially opted into his $52.6 million contract for the 2025‑26 season on Sunday, hoping for another title push in what could be his 23rd year in the NBA.

Meanwhile, Austin Reaves declined a four‑year, $89.2 million extension, paving the way for a new deal next summer, while Dorian Finney-Smith declined his player option to become a free agent.

Through the regular season and playoffs, the Lakers’ lack of a true rim protector was apparent. With Anthony Davis traded in February for Luka Doncic, the team has been searching for a center to anchor its defense.

With all this uncertainty surrounding the team, and free agency meetings permitted to begin in just a few hours, the Lakers made an announcement unrelated to roster building or contract negotiations. On Monday morning, the Lakers unveiled their new Statement Edition jersey for the 2025-26 season.

However, the timing sparked backlash across social media, with fans accusing the organization of misplaced priorities.

“Agree. This type of announcement shouldn’t be made a few hours before free agency starts,” one fan wrote.

“😭😭😭😭😭😭 they’re unveiling jerseys instead of signing centers,” another fan added.

“This for everyone who asked the Lakers to do something. Here’s something…,” a fan joked.

“NOBODY CARES PELINKA GIVE ME A CENTER,” another fan said.

“How are we the worst ran team in the league?” a fan questioned.

While free agents cannot officially sign until July 6, meetings are permitted to begin on Monday, and contracts can be verbally agreed to.
