Iowa basketball fans react as Jaidyn Coon commits to Hawkeyes

April 3, 2026

Fresh off an impressive March Madness run to the Elite Eight, Iowa basketball and head coach Ben McCollum landed a big piece for its future on Thursday evening with the commitment of four-star in-state small forward Jaidyn Coon, which has Hawkeyes fans in a frenzy on social media.

Hailing from Storm Lake, Iowa, Coon chose the Hawkeyes over Iowa State, Illinois, TCU, Nebraska, and Drake after a Tuesday official visit to Iowa City. The 6-foot-6, 180-pounder averaged 22.0 points and 9.3 rebounds per game for the Tornadoes during his senior season as Storm Lake finished 24-3 and reached the Class 3A state semifinals.

As Iowa fans celebrate the noteworthy addition to the program, here are some of the best social media reactions to the news:

Thank you Lord for blessing me with an opportunity of a life time, I dreamed as a kid playing at the collegiate level. Lastly I wanna thank everyone who has supported me throughout this process! GO HAWKS🐤#committedpic.twitter.com/eWjGVnpJI3

Major, major upside as a shooter, defender and on-ball creator.

Much-needed athleticism for Ben McCollum, too. Explosive athlete with some serious bounce. Jaidyn Coon is gonna be a fun one to watch in Iowa City. pic.twitter.com/EgGMTHntmV
