A man in Adamawa State, Mathias Yusuf, has been sentenced to a three-month jail term for stealing beer and getting drunk on it.
Yusuf was charged with stealing six bottles of liquor, consuming them all, and becoming intoxicated.
The Adamawa State Jail Delivery Committee, a body currently reviewing pending cases to decongest correctional centres in the state, heard Yusuf’s case along with several others.
The committee, headed by the State Chief Judge, Justice Hafsat Abdulrahman, on Thursday ruled that the 48-year-old deserved a three-month jail term and community service for the offence of theft.
The decision was pronounced during the committee’s visit to the Jimeta Custodial Centre, where Yusuf had earlier been remanded by the Chief Magistrate Court II for theft, contrary to Section 278 of the Penal Code Law.
Testifying before the committee, Yusuf confessed that he stole six bottles of beer and some cigarettes from a beer parlour in Jambutu, a community in Yola North Local Government Area.
He admitted that he drank the liquor, became drunk, and was subsequently arrested.
The committee ordered that Yusuf’s three-month jail term should run from the date of his remand on August 29, 2025.
