IPOB lawyer fumes as gunmen invade meeting in Anambra, open fire on Ebonyi natives

July 2, 2025

Lead counsel for the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, Ifeanyi Ejiofor, has vehemently condemned the killing of about 19 unsuspecting Nigerians in Ogboji community, Orumba South Local Government Area of Anambra State by gunmen.

DAILY POST reports that some assailants, yet to be identified, had on Monday evening invaded the community while some natives of Ebonyi State were having meetings and opened fire on them, killing at least 19 people.

Although the police had launched an investigation to unravel the circumstances surrounding the incident, it was gathered that the attack was birthed by a disagreement within the group, as the gunmen reportedly requested for minutes of the meeting before the shooting.

Reacting, Ejiofor, in a statement issued on Tuesday, described the incident as a senseless and cold-blooded massacre, stressing that the victims were brutally murdered.

The human rights lawyer, who stated that Nigerians have the right to life, freedom of movement, peaceful assembly, and the liberty to reside and engage in lawful activities, said the killing was a “grievous violation of these sacred rights and an intolerable affront to the principles of justice, unity, and peaceful co-existence.”

He called on authorities in Anambra State to ensure that the killers are taken into custody and prosecuted accordingly.

According to him, the assailants must be “subjected to the full weight of the law, no matter how highly placed or shielded they may appear to be.

“We insist that the findings of the investigations must not be shrouded in secrecy.”
