Abia ex-lawmaker demands justice over police alleged killing of youth

July 4, 2025

The former Minority Leader of the Abia State House of Assembly, Chijioke Chukwu has called for thorough investigation into the alleged shooting of a youth of Ugwueke community in Bende LGA, Anyim Elijah Obinna and two other persons.

Obinna, a 35-year-old youth, was allegedly shot dead at a hotel located in Ugwueke community by a police officer during a birthday party of Obinna’s friend on April 20, 2025.

The former Minority leader, who was reacting to the incident, appealed to Abia people, including the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Benjamin Kalu, who represents Bende Federal constituency, to intervene and bring justice for the late Obinna.

Chukwu rejected the claims that Obinna and the other two youths were victims of cult-related clash, alleging that the police officer who carried out the shooting serves in Aba.

Also narrating the incident, the father of the victim, Mr. Paul Anyim said:

“We went home on Easter holidays and my son came back on Saturday at about half past 2 p.m.

“So on Sunday, exactly quarter after 6, he left my house with his younger brother after dinner for a birthday party of one of their friends at Grand Star Hotel in Ugwueke.”

He said that at 10pm, he started hearing villagers shouting that his son Elijah Anyim Obinna has been shot, narrating that his son was later confirmed dead.

Mr Anyim said that his family reported the matter to the Igbere Police Division Bende on April 21, 2025 and also reported it to the State Criminal Investigation Department, SCID, Umuagu, Umuahia.

Mr Anyim said that officers at SCID asked him to return to Igbere, telling him that Igbere Police Division would bring the case file to the SCID.

He expressed surprise that the policeman who allegedly shot his son had not been fished out by the police.

Message sent to the Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO of Abia State Police Command, DSP Maureen Chinaka on Thursday concerning the allegations was not replied at the time of this report.
