Nigerian Clubs Land Massive N500m Windfall As CAF Doubles Prize Money

March 11, 2026

Four Nigerian football clubs are in line for a significant financial boost, thanks to a major prize money increase announced by the Confederation of African Football (CAF).

Rivers United, Remo Stars, Kwara United, and Abia Warriors, who all participated in this season’s CAF inter-club competitions, are set to benefit from the enhanced payout structure.

The windfall follows an announcement by CAF President Dr. Patrice Motsepe revealing a $2 million increase for the winners of both the CAF Champions League and the CAF Confederation Cup.

This substantial hike means the Champions League winner will now take home $6 million, while the Confederation Cup champion will earn $4 million.

However, the financial boost extends beyond just the title winners. CAF has also doubled the solidarity payment for clubs eliminated in the preliminary stages, raising it from $50,000 to $100,000. At the current exchange rate of approximately N1,398 to the dollar, this translates to a handsome N559 million for each of the Nigerian representatives.

For three of the clubs—Remo Stars, Kwara United, and Abia Warriors—this payment comes despite their early exits. Remo Stars, the NPFL champions, were knocked out of the Champions League preliminaries by Mamelodi Sundowns, while cup winners Kwara United and Abia Warriors also failed to progress past the first hurdle in the Confederation Cup.

Rivers United, who made it to the group stage of the Champions League, are poised for an even more lucrative return. While official figures for group-stage exits are yet to be confirmed, the previous payout stood at $700,000. If that amount is maintained or increased, Rivers United could pocket a combined total of at least N1.5 billion, factoring in the new solidarity payment.

Despite a disappointing group-stage campaign where they failed to secure a win, the “Pride of Rivers” have a chance for immediate redemption.

They are currently top of the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) title race, positioning themselves for another shot at continental glory next season.
