Selena Gomez has always been candid with her fans about the ups and downs of her life, from her struggles with Lupus to her success in the entertainment industry. Now, in a deeply personal interview with Vanity Fair published on September 9, the multi-talented singer and actress has opened up about a new challenge she faces: the inability to carry her own children due to medical complications.

Gomez, 32, who has been dating music producer Benny Blanco since July 2023, shared that while she dreams of becoming a mother, pregnancy is not an option for her. “I haven’t ever said this,” Gomez revealed in the cover story. “But I unfortunately can’t carry my own children. I have a lot of medical issues that would put my life and the baby’s in jeopardy. That was something I had to grieve for a while.”

Gomez has been open about her battle with Lupus, a chronic autoimmune disease, since she first disclosed her diagnosis to Billboard in 2015. The disease, which led her to undergo a kidney transplant in 2017, continues to impact her health and life decisions. However, the Only Murders in the Building star remains optimistic about her future as a parent, considering alternative paths like surrogacy and adoption.

“I thought it would happen the way it happens for everyone,” she admitted. “I’m in a much better place with that. I find it a blessing that there are wonderful people willing to do surrogacy or adoption, which are both huge possibilities for me.”

Despite the challenges, Gomez is looking forward to building a family, albeit in a different way than she originally envisioned. “I’m excited for what that journey will look like, but it’ll look a little different. At the end of the day, I don’t care. It’ll be mine. It’ll be my baby.”

Her partner, Benny Blanco, has also been vocal about his desire to start a family. During a radio interview with Howard Stern four months ago, Blanco expressed that having children with Gomez is his “next goal” in life. “It’s always a topic of conversation to me every day,” he said, revealing the couple’s shared aspirations.

In her interview with Vanity Fair, Gomez reflected on Blanco’s candidness during the radio show. “He can’t lie,” she said, laughing. “After the interview, I was dying laughing. Like, ‘Anything else you wanted to put out there?’”

Gomez, who recently reached billionaire status thanks to her booming Rare Beauty line, investments, and various entertainment projects, emphasized that her relationship with Blanco has been a source of immense joy and stability. “I’ve never been loved this way,” she said. “He’s just been a light. A complete light in my life. He’s my best friend. I love telling him everything.”

The interview arrives during a busy and successful period for Gomez. She is currently enjoying critical acclaim for her role in the Netflix film Emilia Perez, directed by Jacques Audiard, which premiered at the Cannes Film Festival in May and is set for release in November. Additionally, Gomez is up for a Best Actress Emmy nomination for her performance in Only Murders in the Building, whose fourth season premiered on August 27.

However, despite her professional achievements, Gomez is clear that her personal life is her top priority. “Before I met my boyfriend, I was single for five years, with the exception of going on a few dates,” she shared. “And I was like, ‘OK, if this is the vibe, then what is the most important thing to me? Family.’”
