North Carolina Megachurch Pastor Ordered to Pay $12K Monthly Alimony After 33-Year Marriage Ends

August 12, 2024

Gilbert Andre Thompson, Jr., widely known as “Pastor Andy,” of the 15,000-member World Overcomers Christian Church in Durham, North Carolina, has agreed to pay his ex-wife $12,000 per month in alimony following their recent divorce. The separation, which ended 33 years of marriage, has drawn significant attention due to the prominence of the pastor and the substantial financial settlement involved.

Court documents obtained by *The Roys Report* reveal that Pastor Thompson and his former wife, Dequilla LaShawn, legally separated in March 2023, with their divorce finalized on July 1. The terms of the settlement include a $1.3 million alimony agreement, in which Pastor Thompson will make monthly payments of $12,000 to his ex-wife for the next nine years. Thompson initially filed for divorce on June 10.

The divorce agreement also outlines the division of the couple’s substantial assets. Notably, Pastor Thompson will retain ownership of a 58-acre property located on Lolly Lane in Mebane, North Carolina, situated just north of the couple’s previous residence. However, according to the agreement, Dequilla Thompson will receive only $50,000 from the eventual sale of this property.

The couple’s primary residence, a 14,000-square-foot mansion valued at $2.8 million by Zillow, is also a focal point of the settlement. The luxurious home features a variety of high-end amenities, including a gym, theatre seating, an infinity pool, and a hot tub. Records show that the megachurch originally purchased this property in 2018 for $1.53 million from 2020 Properties LLC. In 2021, the deed was transferred to Restore Community Development, a move that did not involve any financial transaction.

Additional assets were also divided as part of the divorce. Dequilla Thompson was awarded a rental house in Rocky Mount, valued at approximately $154,000, while Pastor Thompson retained responsibility for a $25,602 IRS debt. He also retained ownership of the vehicles used by their four adult children, including a 2021 Kia Forte, a 2024 Kia Seltos, a 2016 Jeep Cherokee, and a 2013 Cadillac STS, along with his personal vehicle, a Ford F-150.

Both parties have retained control of their respective businesses. Pastor Thompson continues to lead Thompson Communications Group, LLC, while Dequilla Thompson maintains ownership of Projects of Home Inc.

This high-profile divorce has brought renewed scrutiny to Pastor Thompson and his church, which claims to be one of the fastest-growing in America, reportedly impacting over a million people weekly through Thompson’s television program, “The Truth.” However, public records and court documents reveal that the church and its leader have faced several legal challenges in recent years, including two negligence lawsuits, a contract dispute, and a complaint involving a minor since 2017.

Pastor Thompson, who founded World Overcomers Christian Church in 2003, is not only a religious leader but also an author of several books on relationships, including *Real Love Dating* and *Real Love Marriage*. Despite the personal and legal challenges, he continues to lead a fellowship of pastors and church leaders.

The details of the divorce settlement, along with the ongoing legal challenges, have cast a spotlight on the financial and personal lives of one of North Carolina’s most prominent religious figures.
