In a startling turn of events, Sheikha Mahra Bint Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, daughter of Dubai’s ruler, has announced her divorce via Instagram just two months after the birth of her daughter. The 30-year-old princess made the announcement on her verified account, declaring her separation from husband Sheikh Mana bin Mohammed bin Rashid bin Mana Al Maktoum.
The post read: “Dear Husband, As you are occupied by other companions, I hereby declare our divorce, I divorce you, I divorce you, and I divorce you.” This statement, which uses the Islamic practice known as triple talaq, has caused a sensation throughout the UAE. While triple talaq allows a husband to divorce his wife by stating “I divorce you” three times, its usage and legality are contested and banned in many countries.
There has been no official response from the House of Maktoum, the ruling family of Dubai, regarding Sheikha Mahra’s announcement. The lack of an official statement has led to widespread speculation, with many wondering if Sheikha Mahra’s account may have been compromised.
Reactions on social media have been mixed, with a significant number of comments expressing both support and confusion. One user commented, “You deserve the best darling,” while another added, “Beautiful Arab women deserve respect and love.” A third user noted, “I find it empowering when a woman recognises her worth and confidently stands her ground.”
Sheikha Mahra married Sheikh Mana last May, and her public declaration has left many residents and observers shocked. Under UAE law, a Muslim man may have up to four wives, provided he treats them equally. The implication in Sheikha Mahra’s post suggests she believes this condition was not met.
Sheikha Mahra, who graduated from a London university in 2023, is also known for her advocacy for women’s rights. Her bold move to publicly announce her divorce may further amplify her voice in this arena.
