How much did George Kittle, Christian McCaffrey do in practice return?

August 24, 2026

There was good news on the injury front for the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday with running back Christian McCaffrey and tight end George Kittle both getting back no the field following prolonged absences.

It’s not a huge surprise given the amount of time both have been away that neither was a full participant in Sunday’s session. McCaffrey, who missed the last couple of weeks with “tightness,” did more than Kittle who was activated off the PUP list Sunday morning.

According to ESPN’s Nick Wagoner, Kittle was limited to just individual drills while McCaffrey was held to only seven reps in the team portion of practice.

It’s clear the 49ers are going to be extremely cautious with both players since the goal is to gear them up for Week 1 of the regular season. With more than two weeks to go until then there’s no reason to push either player.

The good news for now is that both players were in uniform and practicing for the first time this preseason. Even if Kittle doesn’t suit up for Week 1, the on-field reps now will make sure he’s ready to hit the ground running whenever he does suit up.
