The National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) has revealed that no fewer than 1,374 people lost their lives in road accidents across Nigeria in the fourth quarter of 2025.

This was contained in the Bureau’s latest report, which showed that the fatalities occurred in 2,731 road traffic crashes recorded within the period.

According to the NBS, the figure represents a 12.20 per cent increase compared with the 2,434 crashes reported in the third quarter (Q3) of 2025. It also marks a 6.72 per cent rise when compared with the 2,559 crashes recorded in the same period in 2024.

The report further indicated that serious crashes constituted the highest number of cases, with 1,775 incidents recorded. Fatal crashes followed with 677 cases, while minor crashes accounted for the lowest number at 279.

“Analysis of fatalities by gender indicates that males accounted for the majority of deaths. A total of 1,085 males were killed, representing 78.97 per cent of total fatalities, while 289 females died, accounting for 21.03 per cent,” the report stated.

The NBS also disclosed that men made up the majority of those injured in the accidents. It noted that 6,561 males sustained injuries during the period, representing 75.19 per cent of the total injured persons, while 2,165 females were injured, accounting for 24.81 per cent.

Additionally, the bureau reported that 4,059 vehicles were involved in road crashes during the quarter, reflecting a 9.41 per cent increase from the 3,710 vehicles recorded in Q3 2025.

On the regional distribution of crashes, the South-West recorded the highest number with 763 incidents, followed by the North-Central with 744 cases. The South-South zone recorded the lowest number of crashes at 152.

Casualty figures were highest in the North-Central zone with 2,649, followed by the North-West with 2,497, while the South-South recorded the lowest number at 420.
