Paris, France — French authorities have arrested several suspects in connection with the audacious theft of crown jewels from the Louvre Museum, one week after the heist that shocked the world, the Paris prosecutor’s office confirmed on Sunday.

According to prosecutor Laure Beccuau, investigators made the arrests on Saturday evening. One of the suspects was reportedly apprehended at Roissy Airport while attempting to flee the country. Although French media outlets BFM TV and Le Parisien reported that two suspects were detained, Beccuau did not confirm the exact number of individuals taken into custody or whether the stolen jewels have been recovered.

The spectacular theft occurred early last Sunday morning, when thieves managed to break into the world’s most visited museum and escape with jewelry estimated to be worth 88 million euros ($102 million). Officials described how the intruders used a basket lift to scale the museum’s façade, forced open a window, smashed display cases, and vanished within eight minutes.

The incident, now being described as one of the most daring art crimes in recent European history, has sparked outrage and deep embarrassment for French cultural authorities. The Louvre’s director condemned the breach as a “terrible failure,” pledging full cooperation with investigators to strengthen museum security and recover the missing treasures.

The investigation is ongoing as police continue to trace the stolen jewels and identify potential accomplices.
