Israel Confirms Brutal Murder of Six Hostages in Gaza, Including Israeli-American Goldberg-Polin

September 1, 2024

In a devastating development, Israel’s military announced the recovery of the bodies of six hostages who were killed by Hamas militants in Gaza. Among the deceased was Israeli-American Hersh Goldberg-Polin, whose capture had drawn significant international attention over the last 10 months. The discovery, which has delivered a fresh wave of heartbreak to families and communities, underscores the ongoing horrors of the hostage crisis that has gripped the region since the militants’ attack on October 7.

Israeli officials disclosed that three of the six hostages were supposed to be released as part of a humanitarian agreement brokered in early July. However, delays in the process left them vulnerable to the brutal actions of their captors. “It’s way too late for the six who have been killed, but it’s time to reach an agreement,” said one Israeli official, expressing frustration over the delays.

Goldberg-Polin, 23, was taken at gunpoint during the Nova music festival. His story, marked by his family’s relentless efforts to secure his release, became a poignant symbol of the crisis. The family, known for their vocal campaigning, met with world leaders and addressed the Democratic National Convention earlier this month, drawing global attention to the plight of the hostages.

In a statement, the Goldberg-Polin family expressed their deep sorrow: “With broken hearts, the Goldberg-Polin family is devastated to announce the death of their beloved son and brother, Hersh. The family thanks you all for your love and support and asks for privacy at this time.”

The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) reported that the bodies were discovered in tunnels beneath Gaza and had been murdered just before the military reached them. IDF spokesperson Rear Adm. Daniel Hagari condemned the killings, highlighting the barbarity of the act.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, in a taped message on Sunday, expressed his shock and sorrow over the murders, condemning Hamas for its ruthless actions and accusing the group of avoiding genuine negotiations. He reaffirmed Israel’s commitment to pursuing Hamas despite the grim discovery.

US President Joe Biden also reacted to the news with a statement of grief and anger, particularly acknowledging the Goldberg-Polin family’s unwavering courage. “They have been relentless and irrepressible champions of their son and of all the hostages held in unconscionable conditions,” Biden said, while mourning the loss of the young man who had become a symbol of the international hostage crisis.

The Israeli military also identified the other five victims as Eden Yerushalmi, Carmel Gat, Almog Sarusi, Alex Lobanov, and Ori Danino. The tragic loss of these individuals marks another sorrowful chapter in the ongoing conflict, with their families and the broader international community left to grapple with the devastating consequences.
