Governor Abba Yusuf of Kano State has reinstated the deposed Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, fulfilling a key campaign promise. This decision follows the governor’s signing of a bill repealing the State Emirate Council Law of 2019, which had created five emirate councils.
On Thursday, the Kano State House of Assembly passed the bill to dissolve the four additional emirates established by former Governor Abdullahi Ganduje. The governor promptly signed the bill into law on the same day.
Governor Yusuf announced the reinstatement of Sanusi shortly after the signing ceremony, emphasizing that the new law provides for the removal of the five emirs appointed under the previous administration. “The law provided an opportunity for the reinstatement of the 14th Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, and the removal of the 15th Emir of Kano, Aminu Ado Bayero, along with the Emirs of Bichi, Rano, Karaye, and Gaya,” stated the governor’s spokesperson, Sanusi Bature.
Governor Yusuf articulated that bringing Sanusi back to the throne is aimed at fostering peace and prosperity in Kano. He asserted that the repeal of the emirate council law was a step towards restoring the state’s historical and cultural heritage. “The return of Muhammadu Sanusi II will propel peace and prosperity, adding that the repeal of the council law was in realization of his campaign commitments to restore the lost glory of the state and its rich cultural heritage,” Yusuf said.
The governor issued a 48-hour ultimatum for Aminu Ado Bayero and the other four emirs to vacate their palaces and hand over all emirate properties to the deputy governor’s office. “The former emirs are to hand over all properties in their possession to the Commissioner for Local Government, who doubles as the state Deputy Governor,” Yusuf stated.
Governor Yusuf expressed confidence that the new law will unite the people of Kano and promote sustainable socio-economic development. He emphasized that this move symbolizes the restoration of the revered legacy of the Kano Emirate, a tradition that has endured for over a thousand years.
“Everyone should go about their normal activities. We have done what we believe is in the best interest of the state and its people,” the governor assured. “I want to inform the good people of Kano that today, we reappointed Sanusi Lamido Aminu Sanusi, popularly known as Muhammadu Sanusi II, as the 16th Emir of Kano.”
Governor Yusuf also urged the populace to continue supporting his administration in its efforts to deliver infrastructural advancements that will propel Kano to greater heights.
