May 6, 2024

The Federal Government has refuted claims that discussions are underway to establish foreign military bases in Nigeria, specifically in the northern region.

In a statement released by the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, the government vehemently dismissed the allegations as false and urged the public to disregard them entirely.

“The Federal Government is not in any such discussion with any foreign country,” stated Minister Idris.

He further clarified, “The government has not received any proposals from any country on the establishment of any foreign military bases in Nigeria.”

Minister Idris emphasized that while the Nigerian government collaborates with foreign entities to address ongoing security challenges, there have been no talks regarding the establishment of foreign military installations within the country’s borders.

“The Nigerian government already enjoys foreign cooperation in tackling ongoing security challenges,” he noted.

He also reiterated the commitment of Chief Bola Tinubu, emphasizing that the government aims to deepen these partnerships to achieve the national security objectives outlined in the Renewed Hope Agenda.

The statement from the Federal Government comes amidst growing concerns and rumours regarding the presence of foreign military forces in Nigeria, particularly in the northern region.
