In an unexpected turn of events, White House National Security spokesman John Kirby revealed on Sunday that Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin’s doctors believe he may require additional care. The Defense Secretary, who is currently hospitalized for complications related to prostate cancer treatment, is undergoing physical therapy with no specific release date determined.

During an interview on CBS’s ‘Face the Nation,’ Kirby stated, “We’ll see, you know, when he can be released, but obviously they still feel like he may need some additional care.” Despite the ongoing health concerns, Kirby emphasized that Austin remains actively involved and engaged in his role, with routine communication maintained between President Joe Biden and the Defense Secretary.

A source of controversy emerged when it was disclosed that Austin’s hospitalization, including a urinary tract infection, was not promptly communicated to President Biden. Acknowledging this lapse in judgment, Biden expressed confidence in Austin during a statement on Friday. However, the incident has drawn criticism from lawmakers and surprised the White House.

The Pentagon confirmed on Saturday that Austin, 70, is in good condition but has not provided a specific date for his release. Austin was initially admitted to Walter Reed National Military Medical Center on December 22 for prostate cancer treatment and readmitted on January 1 due to complications.
