Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi announced her bid for re-election to Congress on Friday, as Democrats gear up to reclaim the majority in 2024. At the age of 83, Pelosi unveiled her candidacy in her San Francisco district, where she has been a representative for over 35 years.
In a tweet, Pelosi expressed her commitment to advancing San Francisco’s values and contributing to the nation’s recovery, stating, “Our country needs America to show the world that our flag is still there, with liberty and justice for ALL. That is why I am running for reelection — and respectfully ask for your vote.”
Having first been elected to Congress in 1987, Pelosi has achieved historical milestones, notably becoming the first female speaker in 2007 and regaining the speaker’s position in 2019. Throughout her tenure, she led the Democratic Party through significant legislative accomplishments, such as the passage of the Affordable Care Act, as well as challenging times marked by two impeachments of former President Donald Trump.
Pelosi’s announcement puts to rest any speculation about her retirement, as the influential leader, bearing the honorific title of speaker emeritus, continues to play a pivotal role within the party and remains a substantial fundraiser for Democrats.
